Welcome to Our Blog
When translated from an Italian phrase, ‘Far Niente’ romantically means ‘without a care’. We hope you recapture that essence as you take a behind-the-scenes peek at Far Niente and the fine Cabernet and Chardonnay we produce here in Oakville.

Our New Napa Cabernet is Our Finest Napa Valley Expression!
by Far Niente | 2020 | 7:42 am
Deeply reflective of Far Niente’s nearly four decades of crafting majestic Napa Cabernets, our Far Niente Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon marries Cabernet Sauvignon from our estate vineyard in Oakville with hand-selected Cabernet lots from Calistoga, Oak Knoll, St. Helena, Stags Leap, Diamond Mountain, and Yountville.
As we anticipate the fall release of the 2018 vintage of our iconic Oakville Estate Cabernet, we are excited to share our new 2018 Far Niente Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with you!
Wait? There are TWO Far Niente Cabernets?
Since 1982, Cabernet has been a hallmark of Far Niente’s winemaking program since 1982. Our first vintages married Cabernet Sauvignon from our estate vineyard in Oakville with exceptional vineyards across the Napa Valley. With the 2001 vintage, the wine became 100% Oakville estate grown and bottled.
Then, starting with the 2017 vintage, we made the decision to craft two Cabernet Sauvignons under the Far Niente label: our legendary Oakville Estate Cabernet and a Napa Valley Cabernet.
“We have this intimate understanding of the Napa Valley, and that deep well of knowledge, combined with the exceptional fruit we grow in our own Oakville estate vineyards, allows us to craft Napa Valley Cabernets that are exuberant and deeply fruited in youth yet develops layers of complexity and sophistication over time,” says Far Niente Winemaker Nicole Marchesi. “It’s incredibly exciting to craft not one but two compelling Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignons. ”
While both our Napa Valley and Oakville Estate Cabernets are expressive, nuanced and timeless, they are also distinctly unique Napa Valley wines. We highlight those distinctions below.
The Napa Valley Paradigm: Deeply reflective of Far Niente’s nearly four decades of crafting majestic Napa Cabernets, our Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, marries estate-grown Oakville fruit with mouthwatering Cabernet lots from hand-picked Calistoga, Oak Knoll, St. Helena, Stags Leap, Diamond Mountain, and Yountville vineyards. It is our heritage wine and our finest interpretation of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
“Making our Napa Valley Cabernet is like a puzzle,” says Far Niente Winemaker Nicole Marchesi. “Throughout the growing season and especially at harvest, I’m thinking about how all of the different vineyard components will complement our estate grown-fruit and come together to make a really balanced, beautiful wine.”
The Oakville Icon: Rooted exclusively in Oakville, our Far Niente Estate Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, Oakville celebrates the very best of Martin Stelling Vineyard. Winemaker Niocle Marchesi selects the finest blocks of our Oakville vineyards to create this highly allocated, limited-production wine. Each vintage exemplifies the power and finesse of our estate-grown fruit. It is our highest expression of Oakville, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
“When you have a vineyard that is the caliber of the Martin Stelling Vineyard, then my job as a winemaker is to do all I can to guide these grapes into expressing everything they already have to offer,” says Marchesi. “It’s my job to harness the incredible color, tannin and flavor we consistently get from our estate grown fruit, and shape it into the iconic Oakville Cabernet for which Far Niente is recognized, aka, a wine that has layers of dark black fruit flavors and velvety textures supported by long, integrated tannins and great acidity.”
