Powerful and driven, State Ranch captivates the nose with a perfume of mixed wild berries, black cherry and aromatic herbs. At once juicy and concentrated, layers of black plum, black currant, and clove flavors unfold on the tongue. Light rains and a moderate summer in 2020 led to low yields and concentrated berries.
The growing season started with light winter rains, followed by dry conditions and mild temperatures. Summer remained moderate, leading to low yields and small berries with high concentration, structure, and flavor. August saw small heat spikes and the start of the Lightning Complex wildfires. We monitored for smoke taint and harvested fruit on September 17, before the Glass Fire. Fermenting in small lots allowed us to test batches, resulting in a final blend with lively natural acidity and refined tannins.
Club Cabernet
Far Niente’s Club Cabernet wine club was created for lovers of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
Where cool breezes shape elegant and supple wines.
Named after George C. Yount, one of the first frontiersmen to plant grapevines in the valley, wines from Yountville are often elegant and supple, thanks to its southerly position, where cool breezes and fog are a constant presence.
Harvested from State Ranch
State Ranch is located northeast of the town of Yountville. The 23-acre vineyard is divided into two parcels by State Lane Road and consists of both older and younger vines. Many excellent wines are produced in this area, in part due to the rocky, loam soil, which has excellent drainage throughout the year. The vines, as well as the clusters, are moderate in size and the vineyard gets full sun throughout the day. As the young vines mature, we will be harvesting many different clones to make the final wine. Nickel & Nickel selects fruit from 11 acres of the vineyard.

“Blackcurrants, violets and other flowers. Cassis bush. Lavender. Medium-bodied with a beautiful center palate and layers of very fine tannins. Lovely length and harmony. You want to drink this one now.”
